“For about an hour we rattle along a dirt road through hill country whose valleys are laden with citrus, avocados, walnut trees and tomatoes. We stop for lunch at a a lonely ruin called “Tara Huasi” (old house). A long wall of lichen-covered stones stretches before us, their burnished bronze hues glowing in the midday sun.”
